TITLE: ACTING AND VOICE WORKSHOPS START ON 9/10
Stonington, Maine – Opera House Arts is pleased to offer two performing arts workshops starting on Saturday, September 10 through October 29. The one-hour Acting Basics Workshop starts at 10am and the one-hour Voice Basics Workshop starts at 11am. Both of these 8-week classes are held at the Stonington Opera House and are suited for those ages 12 to adult. These workshops are part of Opera House Arts’ community and learning program. Register today at operahousearts.org. Face masks required.
Both workshops are being taught by Jenn Adams, Community and Learning Associate at Opera House Arts. Born in Kittery, Jenn Adams recently moved back to Maine after spending the last 20 years making theatre in Chicago. She co-founded two theatre companies there, including Halcyon Theatre, a company dedicated to equity, diversity, and inclusion for over 14 years. She has worked as a director, actor, arts administrator and educator; spent 6 months touring educational theatre to schools up and down the east coast and gulf states; and has done everything from classical theatre to murder mysteries to The Wizard of Oz. She worked as and trained Standardized Patient(s), portraying patients for medical students to give them better communication skills and practical experience. Jenn most recently appeared in Women and the Sea at Portland Stage and in Opera House Arts’ concert “Broadway Comes to Stonington” with Hugh Panaro and Leenya Rideout and Friends. She sings in a rock band without a name at the moment, and most recently had a great time directing You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown at New Surry Theatre in Blue Hill.
Acting Basics is a beginner-level class, where students will learn the skills of acting by playing theatre games, creating characters, and working on text. How can a costume piece or a headache or thinking of your favorite dessert change how you express yourself? How does it affect the way you interact with the people around you? Build confidence in acting and have lots of fun! This is a great class for beginners and beyond.
Voice Basics is a beginner-level class, where students will learn singing techniques, warmups, and singing melodies and harmonies. We will work on songs as a group, breaking out into smaller groups or solos when people feel comfortable. Have you always wanted to learn to sing, but don’t know where to start? Love to sing, but get nervous to sing by yourself? Or has it just been a while and you want to experience the love you used to have for singing that got lost somewhere along the way? This is a great starter class.
Opera House Arts, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was founded in 1999 to restore the 1912 Stonington Opera House, on the National Register of Historic Places, to its original role as a performance venue and a community gathering space. We offer a year-round schedule of professional theater, music, film, dance, educational programs, community events, and more. Performances take place in multiple venues, including the Stonington Opera House, the restored Burnt Cove Church Community Center, and at site-specific locations across Deer Isle and Stonington, Maine. Opera House Arts’ programs serve all of Hancock County’s winter and summer residents and visitors, with a special emphasis on the residents of Deer Isle and the Blue Hill Peninsula.
