TITLE: Opera House Arts Dedication Ceremony for National Register Historic Marker

Stonington, ME—On Thurs., Oct. 17 the Stonington Opera House unveiled a new sign marking its 1991 addition to the National Register of Historic Places.  The Opera House sits among a rich tapestry of historic buildings in Stonington.  It is structures like these that embody the stories and values of our community.

Remarks regarding the history of the Opera House and the long-standing efforts to preserve the structure were relayed to members of the community at a reception in the Opera House lobby. The group was welcomed by OHA board member Jimmy Cook. Speakers included OHA board members, OHA Executive Director Erika Sanger, two of OHA’s founders Judith Jerome and Linda Nelson, and State Representative Holly Eaton.

Funding for the historic marker was made possible through a grant from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation.

The Stonington Opera House is a historic center of culture and entertainment, a performance space, and a civic gathering place. Our work is rooted in the belief that access to and participation in the arts transforms lives.

The Stonington Opera House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991 and in 1999, it was rescued by the founders of Opera House Arts, a 501 (c) 3, that was established specifically to restore this historic building to its original purpose.

A cornerstone of a year-round, vibrant Main Street located at the top of the busiest commercial fishing pier in Maine, the Stonington Opera House is an economic engine for the creative economy of Deer Isle.
